Frequently Asked Questions

These FAQs are intended for both new and continuing international students on a student visa.

When do I have to arrive onshore?

If you are an international student on a student visa and enrolled in an in-person ANU program you are expected to make arrangements to arrive in Canberra prior to the first week of the semester in order to be compliant with the .

A CoE is required to maintain student visa status. Noting your face-to-face study requirement, ANU will cancel your CoE if you are not in Canberra by Monday of Week 3.*

It is not sufficient to have just arrived in Australia – you must be on-campus (Canberra) by Monday of Week 3,* unless you have been approved for long-distance or offshore study.

*International students who are commencing at ANU in Semester 2 and are enrolled in Chemistry courses or programs offered by the College of Business & Economics should contact their relevant College for onshore arrival deadlines.

Why do I have to arrive onshore by the deadline?

As a student visa holder you must comply with the conditions of your visa, a full list of which can be found on the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) . ANU must report certain details to DHA, such as your attendance, progress and completion, as part of our ESOS reporting obligations, which relate to your visa conditions.

Failure to study onshore (in-person) – a student visa holder condition – will result in your CoE being cancelled by ANU. This may impact your eligibility to retain your student visa. The only exception is if you are completing the last course of your program that is only available online.

Missing important content at the commencement of the semester may make it too difficult to catch up later and place you at risk of being unable to meet your course requirements. If you do not successfully complete your courses, this may impact your ability to maintain satisfactory academic progress.

What do I do if my visa has not been granted by semester commencement?

If you are a new student and do not receive a visa in time to arrive in Canberra by the deadline, you will need to apply for a later intake (e.g. Semester 1, 2026). You can discuss this with the ANU Admissions team at admissions@anu.edu.au.

Please be advised that the University cannot provide visa advice, or an update on your visa application. You will need to contact the on +61 2 6196 0196 (if offshore) or 131 881 (if in Australia).

I am a continuing student, but I am not able to arrive by semester commencement. What do I do?

You will need to apply for program leave. You will still be required to submit evidence to demonstrate that you were impacted by compassionate or compelling circumstances for the application to be granted.

A delay in receiving a student visa is not generally considered reasonable grounds for program leave.

If you are unable to apply for program leave, you may withdraw from your program. This may impact your eligibility to retain your student visa.

Program withdrawal is final. To be eligible to return to study to ANU, you will need to submit a new application and be assessed for admission to ANU.

Can I study offshore?

You can only study one third of your entire program online and/or through distance learning. If you exceed this, you may be non-compliant with your visa requirements. You must also be enrolled in at least one face-to-face (in-person) course per study period. The only exception is if you are completing the last course of your program that is only available online.

If you are studying offshore, and you are on a student visa, you will not be eligible to hold a CoE for that duration of time. You will need to request a new CoE prior to your return to Australia.

What if my courses are offered online, but I am in Canberra?

As noted above, only up to one third of your program can be studied online and/or through distance learning. You must also be enrolled in at least one course offered in-person per study period, regardless of your location. The only exception to this is if you are completing the last course of your program that is only available online.

I am currently onshore, and I have received a notice that I may in breach of my visa conditions What do I do?

If you are currently onshore and have received a notification from ANU that you are at risk of breaching your visa conditions, you must immediately visit Student Central during opening hours with your passport. You must also ensure that you have provided the University with updated passport details if you have received a new passport after commencing your study at ANU.

If you believe you are receiving these notifications in error, please contact Student Regulation at policy.regs@anu.edu.au as soon as possible.

Can I enrol before I arrive?

As soon as you receive your ANU welcome email and password, you need to set up your ANUHub and student email access. For students commencing a new program in Semester 2, 2025, you should receive your welcome email and password from early June onwards. If you have not received your welcome email and password, please contact acceptance@anu.edu.au.

You are encouraged to enrol as soon as you receive your password. Waiting to enrol until you are onshore may result in not being able to enrol in certain courses, or choose your own timetable, as class numbers are limited. Information about how to enrol for the first time can be found here.

If you are unsure which courses you can choose, please refer to the Programs and Courses , or contact your Academic College. Due to high volumes of enquiries at the start of each semester, there may be a delay in receiving a response. You may also look at registering for a for support with choosing and enrolling in courses.
