Alumni Email

Alumni email is available to all graduates of ANU.

With an ANU Alumni email account you can check your email from wherever you are in Australia or around the world by logging in to Outlook web access.

How to access

Please log a ticket through the , or phone (+61 2 6125 4321 and follow the prompts). Please include your name, date of birth, year of graduation and student ID number (if known). You can also use this request form to update your password.

Changing email address format

Your alumni email account will have a default address in the following format - U1234567@alumni.anu.edu.au. If you would prefer to utilise the following format - firstname.lastname@alumni.anu.edu.au - please select the appropriate option within the form.

Please note that emails to your student's email are not automatically forwarded. Any subscriptions or accounts using your old email address will need to be changed, as well as informing those in your address book.

If you are a current ANU staff member, you will retain the firstname.lastname alias when creating your alumni email account.

Account Protection

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is applied to alumni email accounts to add a second layer of security in line with standard ANU staff and student accounts. After you enter your password, you will be asked to verify your identity using a second method, such as a notification on your smartphone or a code. This process is also known as two-step verification. This ensures that even if a password is stolen, your account remains secure.

Securing these accounts with MFA is a critical step in protecting your email account. It also protects the University’s infrastructure, data, and the safety of our campus community from unauthorised access.

You will not be able to log in to the email account until you have completed MFA registration. A quick start guide is provided below.

  1. On your smartphone: Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. On your computer: Open a web browser and go to
  3. Sign in with your alumni email account credentials (e.g. u123456@alumni.anu.edu.au or firstname.lastname@alumni.anu.edu.au).
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. When a QR code is displayed, open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone, select "Add account," then "Work or school account," and scan the QR code.
  5. Approve the test notification sent to your phone to complete the setup.

  • After entering your password, you will be prompted to approve your login.
  • If you use the Microsoft Authenticator app, you will receive a push notification on your smartphone to approve.
  • If you use a different authenticator app, you will need to open it and enter the 6-digit code it displays.
  • For a more detailed walkthrough, please use the full guide:

If you cannot use the Microsoft Authenticator app for push notifications, you can use a Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) code from another authenticator app.

  • What is TOTP? It's an open standard where an app on your device generates a 6-digit code that changes every 30-60 seconds. You enter this code when prompted for MFA.
  • Device Security: Devices (phone, laptop, desktop) used for a TOTP app must have its storage encrypted and be protected with a password, PIN, or biometric lock (e.g., fingerprint/face ID).
  • Minimum Requirement: A TOTP application is the minimum required MFA method for the ANU environment.
